“The only decision you need to make when you come into one of our Tesla Stations is, do you prefer faster or free?” This is the question Tesla tycoon Elon Musk posed to his audience at the launch of Tesla Motors Battery Swap. The battery swap system offers yet another charging option to Model S owners.
In Tesla’s LA design studio, Elon Musk gave a short presentation of the Battery Swap system also known as Tesla Stations. A platform automatically raised up a Model S and disconnected the depleted battery. It then connected a fully charged battery to the car before lowering the platform. Watch the race between a Model S Battery Swap and an Audi filling up at a gas station in the video below, plus a presentation by Elon Musk.
In about a minute and a half, the Model S is ready to go with a new battery while the Audi is still at the halfway mark to a full tank. Elon Musk said that they searched for the fastest gas station in LA and told the station employee to go as fast as he could. After the 90-second mark, Elon Musk rolled in another Model S to fill in the time while waiting for the Audi to reach a full tank.
Model S owners can swap batteries at Tesla Stations for a fee. “Free” refers to another advanced EV charging infrastructure that Tesla rolled out in line with its award-winning Model S launch, the Supercharger station. Supercharger stations provide free and high-speed EV charging for 80 kWh-equipped Model S cars.
